Der Index gewichtet die Unternehmen dieser Länder nach <a href="Marktkapitalisierung" title="Marktkapitalisierung">Marktkapitalisierung</a> im <a href="Streubesitz" title="Streubesitz">Streubesitz</a> und deckt nach Aussage von FTSE 98 % der weltweit investierbaren Marktkapitalisierung ab. Er wird von der britischen Firma <a href="FTSE_Group" title="FTSE Group">FTSE Russell</a> erstellt und gepflegt.

Unter den Top 10 Referenzindizes ist der FTSE All-World neben dem MSCI World auf Platz 1 der einzig andere global angelegte Index. Der Rest der Top 10 besteht aus Europa-, USA- oder Deutschland-fokussierten Indizes. <p>Neben dem FTSE All-World Index gibt es noch weitere Indizes, welche beanspruchen, den weltweiten Aktienmarkt abzubilden. Dazu zählen der <a href="MSCI_World" title="MSCI World">MSCI World</a>, <a href="MSCI_ACWI" title="MSCI ACWI">MSCI ACWI</a> und der <a href="MSCI_ACWI_IMI" title="MSCI ACWI IMI">MSCI ACWI IMI</a>.
</p><p>Anders als der MSCI World enthält der FTSE All-World auch Aktien aus <a href="Schwellenland" title="Schwellenland">Schwellenländern</a>. Während im MSCI World 23 Länder vertreten sind, sind es beim FTSE All-World mehr als doppelt so viele. <p>Der FTSE All-World Index ist Teil von FTSE Russells Indexreihe <i>FTSE Global Equity Index Series (FTSE GEIS)</i>, welche weitere Indizes umfasst.<sup id="cite_ref-11" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-11"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>11<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Im FTSE All-World Index sind Länder enthalten, die gemäß FTSE als Industrieländer (<i>Developed</i>) und als Schwellenländer (<i>Emerging</i>) klassifiziert sind, wobei letztere noch in <i>Advanced Emerging</i> oder <i>Secondary Emerging</i> aufgeteilt werden. Länder, die als sogenannte <i>Frontier Markets</i> klassifiziert wurden, sind hingegen nicht enthalten.
